What Is Cache Memory?

In the realm of computer technology, memory may refer to many different things. In some instances, memory may come in the form of random access memory (RAM) that allows for tasks to be carried out, or it may refer to storage devices like hard disk drives that allow for data to be retained over time. With many different definitions, it can be quite useful to have a basic understanding of less discussed forms of memory. In this blog, we will discuss cache memory in particular, that of which is a small-sized, volatile form of memory that is more temporary in nature.

As a form of volatile memory, cache memory is only stored for as long as the computer is powered, and it works together with the processor to ensure high-speed data access and storage for regularly used applications, data, and programs. Cache memory can be understood as the quickest form of memory in a typical computer, generally being integrated within the motherboard while being directly embedded on the computer processor or RAM. With this set of capabilities, cache memory makes general operations more efficient as processors can save time by requesting data that is already present within cache instead of having to fetch data from other sources.

Cache memory may be referred to as hardware cache or processor cache, and it gets these names for the fact that it is a physical component of the processor. Depending on whether or not cache memory is directly integrated onto the processor or simply situated close to it, it may be referred to as primary or secondary cache memory respectively. The distance between cache memory and the processor will also determine speed, and size also has a notable effect as well. As a final factor that determines speed, cache memory that has a higher storage capacity will generally work faster than smaller storage capacity options, regardless of the distance between the memory of the processor.

While hardware-based cache is fairly common, it is not the only option available. For example, disk cache is a form of cache memory where a disk has a reserved portion for the storage of regularly used data and programs. With this option, any time a processor initially accesses data, the cache will obtain a copy so that speed and efficiency may be bolstered. When this is not available, the processor will then access data from slower memory mediums like RAM and hard-disk drives.

For those who have computers with modern video cards, cache memory may also be situated within graphics processing chips. With this inclusion, such video cards can carry out complex rendering processes with rapid times, all without needing to place the burden on the computer’s RAM. As such, cache memory on video cards acts in a very similar way to the cache memory found on and around processors.
